How Much Money Can You Make Trading Futures

How Much Money Can You Make Trading Futures

“How much money can you make trading futures?” is a question that uncovers a lot. However, when asked in a trading group, you will mostly get two generic answers.

One person posts a screenshot of a $40,000 day, while the other tells you almost everyone loses. Neither helps you plan anything.

Here is the good news. Futures earnings are not a mystery. They come from simple multiplication, and once you see it, you can work out your own numbers on the back of an envelope.

The true answer comes down to four things: which contract you trade, how many you buy, how far the price moves in your favour, and how much money is backing you.

This guide explains each one, with examples you can follow without a finance degree.

First, What Are You Actually Buying?

Before the money talk, a quick reset on what a futures contract is.

Buying a share of a company means owning a piece of it. Futures work differently. A futures contract is a bet on where a price is going. You never own anything. You open a position, the price moves, and you close it.

Think of it like this. Imagine you could place a bet on the temperature tomorrow. Every degree above your entry pays you $10. Every degree below costs you $10. You don't own the weather, only just positioned in the direction.

Futures work the same way. Buy a contract on the S&P 500, and every point it rises pays you a fixed amount.

Every point it falls costs you the same amount. This fixed amount per point is the number controlling your entire income, so it's where we start.

The One Piece of Maths You Need

Every futures trade, winning or losing, works out like this:

Points the price moved × what one point pays × how many contracts you held

This is the whole formula. Anyone asking how much money can you make trading futures is really asking about these three numbers.

Two of them you choose before you enter.  You pick the contract and size, so you know what a point pays and how many contracts you hold.

Only the price movement is unknown.

In many markets, costs are hidden inside the spread or buried in fees. In futures, you can calculate your exact profit or loss before clicking buy.

What Does One Point Pay?

The answer to how much money you can make trading futures tends to change completely based on the contract picked.

Different contracts do not pay the same amounts per point. This catches out almost every beginner. Two terms first, kept simple:

  • A point is one full unit of price movement. The S&P 500 moving from 5,000 to 5,001 is one point.

  • A tick is the smallest movement allowed. On many contracts, one tick is a quarter of a point.

Here is what the main contract pays:

Contract

Ticker

What one tick pays

What one point pays

E-mini S&P 500

ES

$12.50

$50

Micro E-mini S&P 500

MES

$1.25

$5

E-mini Nasdaq 100

NQ

$5.00

$20

Micro E-mini Nasdaq 100

MNQ

$0.50

$2

E-mini Russell 2000

RTY

$5.00

$50

Micro E-mini Russell 2000

M2K

$0.50

$5

Look at ES and MES. Both track the same index. If the S&P 500 climbs 10 points, ES pays you $500, and MES pays you $50.

Same market and move, but ten times the difference in your pocket. Contracts starting with M are called micros, and they're one tenth the size of the standard version.

Beginners should start there. Earnings tend to be less per trade, but then the odds of surviving long enough to get good are higher.

Step by Step Example

Let's walk through one trade slowly: A trader is watching MNQ, the micro Nasdaq contract. MNQ pays $2 per point.

She entered a long position with five contracts at 20,000. To manage risk, she places a stop-loss at 19,975, risking 25 points, while setting a take-profit order at 20,050 to target a 50-point gain.

  • Her risk: 25 points × $2 × 5 contracts = $250 at stake

  • Her target: 50 points × $2 × 5 contracts = $500 if it works

  • Price runs to her target. She banks $500 before fees.

Take the identical trade with 20 contracts, and it pays $2,000. Take it with 2 contracts, and it pays $200.

Same trader, skill, and market read. The only difference was how much capital she had behind her.

How Much Capital Do You Need to Trade Futures?

How much capital do you need to trade futures has two answers, and they sit very far apart.

Working out how much capital is needed to trade futures in your own account starts with margin.

Margin is the deposit your broker holds while your position is open. On micro contracts, it can be as low as $50 to $500 per contract during the day. Standard contracts cost considerably more.

You also need a cushion to survive losing days without wiping out.

Run the maths on a personal account. Say you average 10 points a day on MES with 2 contracts. MES pays $5 a point, so:

10 points × $5 × 2 contracts = $100 a day, roughly $2,000 a month.

Want $10,000 a month from the same strategy? You need 10 contracts, plus enough capital to hold them through a rough patch.

Saving up to this level takes years for the average person. This is the wall nearly every skilled trader hits, and it has nothing to do with ability.

There's a second route. Prop firms lend you the capital. You pay a fee, prove you can trade within their rules, and they hand you an account to trade. The years of saving compress into days.

What Are Realistic Futures Trading Returns?

Now, here is the honest part. Realistic futures trading returns are measured as percentages of your account.

For instance, a trader consistently making 5% to 10% a month on their allocated capital is doing well by professional standards.

Making it every single month, with no losing stretch, is rare. Anyone promising otherwise is selling you something.

Apply those percentages and the picture becomes clearer. These figures show the gross profit generated at each monthly return.

Actual payouts may be lower if they exceed the payout cycle cap for your account size.

Your account size

3% month

5% month

8% month

$25,000

$750

$1,250

$2,000

$50,000

$1,500

$2,500

$4,000

$100,000

$3,000

$5,000

$8,000

$150,000

$4,500

$7,500

$12,000

* Illustrates profit generated at the stated return. Actual payouts remain subject to the payout cycle cap for the selected account size

The above table reads as maths, not as a forecast. It shows what a percentage may produce on an account size.

Your own results depend on your strategy, discipline, market conditions in the period, and the rules attached to your account. Trading carries risk, and past results guarantee nothing.

Now spot the pattern between two traders who both make 5%.

  • One has $25,000, the other has $150,000.

  • One takes home $1,250, the other $7,500.

Realistic futures trading returns stay percentage-based. So the size of your account sets the dollar figure.

In essence, understanding realistic returns saves you from chasing silly numbers with reckless position sizes and quitting after a 4% month feels disappointing.

How Much Do Prop Firm Traders Make?

Prop firm trading earnings depend on three factors:

  • Your profit split: The percentage of profits you keep. Across the industry, this commonly runs 80% to 100%, varying by firm and plan.

  • Payout rules: Firms usually require a set number of winning days before your first withdrawal, plus a minimum withdrawal amount.

  • Payout caps: Some plans limit how much you can take out per cycle, particularly early on.

An example makes it concrete. Two traders each make $6,000 on a $100,000 account.

  • Trader A is on a 90% split and keeps $5,400.

  • Trader B is on an 80% split and keeps $4,800.

Identical trading, yet $600 difference. So how much prop firm traders make is partly a question about choosing the right plan, not just trading well.

How Much Can You Make With a Funded Futures Account?

Let's make this specific. How much you can make with a funded futures account at Goat Funded Futures depends on your plan and your allocation.

Accounts run from $25,000 up to $150,000 depending on the program. Across all your active accounts combined, total funded allocation reaches up to $750,000, so consistent traders have room to grow.

Your profit split works like this:

  • EOD and FLEX plans pay up to 90%.

  • Sprint and Instant Funded pay 100% on your first $10,000 in profit, then move to 90/10.

Here is how payouts work across the four plans:

Plan

Winning days needed

How payouts work

EOD

7

Up to 90% split

Sprint

5

100% on first $10K, then 90/10, with caps rising each cycle

FLEX

5

Up to 90%, max per cycle $2,000 on 50K, $2,500 on 100K, $3,000 on 150K

Instant Funded

7, plus 10 calendar days for your first reward

100% on first $10K, then 90/10

Minimum withdrawal is $500 on every plan. Payouts process inside 2 business days, and if we ever miss the window, $500 is added to your reward automatically.

Put it together. A trader making 5% on a $100,000 FLEX account produces $5,000. At up to 90%, their share reaches $4,500, subject to the cycle cap and the eligibility rules above. This is what “how much can you make with a funded futures account?” looks like, in practice.

Strong performers can eventually be invited into Path to Live, where accounts reach $150,000 with daily payouts, no consistency rule, and a static drawdown in place of a trailing one.

What Caps Your Earnings

Four things set your ceiling on how much money you can make trading futures. Only one involves the market.

  • Position sizing: Trade beyond your comfort level and it will lead to worse decisions under pressure. Your own nerves cap your account.

  • Your allocation: Covered above. The reason funded accounts exist.

  • Consistency over time: One good month is luck's cousin. Six consistent months is a track record. Great records unlock bigger accounts.

Notice what's missing from this list. None of it is about predicting the market better. Your earnings ceiling is mostly structural and behavioural, which means it's something you can actively fix.
