Beginner’s Guide to How Funded Trading Accounts Work
Learn how funded trading accounts work, what to know about prop firm challenges and how profit splits, trade rules and risk limits affect beginner traders.

A funded trading account gives you access to simulated trading capital under a firm's rules, without requiring you to deposit the full account balance yourself.
Depending on the firm, you may trade in a simulated environment or with live capital. Eligible profits can lead to real payouts, provided you meet the account's conditions.
So, how do funded accounts work from registration to withdrawal? Some firms require you to pass an evaluation before receiving a funded account, while others offer immediate access for a fee. Each route comes with trading rules, risk limits, and payout requirements.
This guide breaks down the process step by step, including account purchases, evaluations, funding options, profit sharing, and how to request your earnings.
What is a funded trading account?
A funded trading account is an account with a balance supplied by a prop firm, so your own savings are not the trading capital.
In return, you pay a one-time fee, follow the firm’s trading rules, and keep a share of the profits you make through payouts. The funded trading accounts meaning is simple to remember: the firm provides the account, you provide the skill, and both sides share the results.
What is funded trading in practice, and why do so many futures traders choose it over funding a large account themselves?
It is a performance-based arrangement in which your trading results, not your bank balance, decide how far you progress. Before looking at the routes, one question needs a clear answer: is the money in these accounts real?
Is the money in a funded account real?
What is a funded account in trading if the money inside it is not real?
In many cases, the balance is simulated, so your trades never put real capital at risk, and the firm uses it to measure your skill.
Payouts work differently: when you meet the payout rules, the profit you request is paid to you in real money.
This is why the funded trading accounts meaning always has two halves: a simulated balance for trading and real money when you withdraw.
A funded account is not a salary, a loan, or a guarantee, so your earnings depend entirely on following the rules and trading well.
Funded accounts also differ from a personal brokerage account, where gains and losses affect your own deposit directly.
How do funded accounts work at GFF?
Every Goat Funded Futures (GFF) route follows the same loop: you buy an account, trade within the rules, build profit, and request a payout when eligible. All GFF accounts trade futures listed on CME Group exchanges, so the market stays the same whichever route you choose.
How do funded futures accounts work day to day? The loop breaks down into four simple steps:
Choose a route: Pick an instant plan funded at purchase, or an evaluation plan where you earn the funded account first.
Trade within the rules: Stay inside the drawdown, daily loss limit, and contract limits, and avoid breaking any other plan rule while you build profit.
Meet the payout requirements: Each plan sets its own winning days or profit target, and requests go through your dashboard.
Complete KYC and get paid: Verify your identity before your first payout, then receive your profit share as real money through Rise.
A 3% processing fee is deducted from every payout, and the minimum payout request is $500 on every plan. Curious about timing? Check out how long it takes to get funded by a prop firm.
Key terms every beginner should know
Before comparing the routes, it is important to understand a few basic terms about how funded accounts work:
Term | What it means in plain words |
Evaluation | A trial stage where you reach a profit target within the rules to earn a funded account. |
Profit target | The gain you must reach to pass an evaluation, set at 6% on every GFF evaluation plan. |
Drawdown | The maximum amount your balance may fall below its highest point before the account closes. |
Daily loss limit | The largest amount you can lose in one trading day before trading pauses. |
Consistency rule | A limit on how much of your total profit may come from a single trading day. |
Winning day | A day with net profit above a minimum set by your plan, counted toward payout eligibility. |
KYC | An identity check you complete before your first payout. |
Payout | A withdrawal of profit, paid as real money after the 3% processing fee. |
How the six routes compare at a glance
The table below compares all six routes side by side, from how each one gets you funded to its drawdown type.
Plan | How you get funded | From (smallest size) | Target to move forward | Drawdown type |
Instant Classic | Funded at purchase, no evaluation | $192 (25K) | 7% account growth before the first payout | Intraday trailing |
Instant Lite | Funded at purchase, no evaluation | $182 (25K) | $1,500 first payout target (25K) | End-of-day trailing |
EOD Challenge | One-phase evaluation | $69 (50K) | 6% profit target | End-of-day trailing |
1-Day-Pass-Plan | One-phase evaluation | $79 (25K) | 6% profit target | End-of-day trailing |
Flex Challenge | One-phase evaluation | $109 (50K) | 6% profit target | End-of-day trailing |
GOAT Daily | One-phase evaluation | $89 (25K) | 6% profit target | End-of-day trailing, intraday once funded |
Prices reflect the smallest size of each plan. There is a $0 activation fee and a one-time purchase price, so nothing recurs monthly once you buy an account.
Profit splits start at 80/20 on EOD, 1-Day-Pass-Plan, and Flex, while Instant Classic, Instant Lite, and GOAT Daily pay 90/10 or better.
The six routes fall into two groups, which we explain below.
Group 1: Instant funding routes: trade from day one
Instant funding gives you direct access to a simulated funded account without requiring you to pass an evaluation. You purchase your preferred plan, receive your account, and can begin trading immediately.
From your first trade, the focus is on following the firm's risk rules, building profits, and meeting the conditions for your first payout. There are no evaluation profit targets to pass, although trading limits and withdrawal requirements still apply.

Instant Classic
Instant Classic starts at $192 for the 25K size, includes no evaluation, and offers no resets, so a breached account needs a new purchase.
Its intraday trailing drawdown is 5% of the starting balance, measured on equity during the session, and it locks permanently once it reaches your starting balance.
Your first payout needs 7% account growth, which is $1,750 on the 25K, plus 7 winning days and 10 calendar days.
Instant Lite
Instant Lite starts at $182 for the 25K size, also skips the evaluation, and cannot be reset, so each account is a single attempt.
Lite has no profit target to pass, but it sets a first payout target of $1,500 on the 25K and $3,000 on the 50K.
Its end-of-day drawdown trails your profits at the close of each day and stops moving at your starting balance plus $100.
A daily profit cap of 5% also applies, and trading stops for the rest of the day once you reach it.
Group 2: Evaluation routes: earn your funded account first
How do funded accounts work when an evaluation comes first? An evaluation is a trial stage where you reach a profit target inside the rules, and passing it unlocks a funded account.
All four evaluation plans use one phase, set a 6% profit target, and have no time limit, so there is no countdown clock to beat.
Once you pass, we review the result and activate your funded account within 2 business days. For a deeper look at the stage, read our guide to prop firm evaluations.
EOD Challenge
EOD Challenge starts at $69 for the 50K size and uses an end-of-day trailing drawdown of $2,000, which locks at your starting balance. The evaluation has no daily loss limit, while the funded account adds a 2.5% limit, which is $1,250 on the 50K.
1-Day-Pass-Plan
The 1-Day-Pass-Plan starts at $79 for the 25K size and applies no consistency rule during the evaluation, which is its defining feature. Its daily loss limit applies in both phases, and this guide to one-day evaluations explains how the format works.
Flex Challenge
Flex Challenge starts at $109 for the 50K size and has no daily loss limit in either phase, which sets it apart in the lineup. Consistency applies only in the evaluation, at 50%, and funded Flex accounts carry no consistency percentage, so one strong day will not block a payout.
GOAT Daily
GOAT Daily starts at $89 for the 25K size and combines an end-of-day trailing drawdown in the evaluation with an intraday trailing drawdown once funded. It is the newest plan, and funded traders can request a payout every 24 hours, with no fixed windows or minimum winning days.
Rules protecting your funded account
Three limits shape every plan we offer: drawdown, daily loss limit, and contract size.
Drawdown: Breaching it closes the account immediately, so keep an eye on the gap between your balance and the drawdown floor.
Daily loss limit: Hitting it pauses trading until the next session, and repeated hits can close some accounts.
Contract limits: Each account size caps how many mini and micro contracts you may hold, for example, 3 minis and 30 micros on a 50K Flex.
Two simple habits protect you: size trades to the contract limits and keep a buffer above the drawdown after each withdrawal. Traders who respect these limits and collect payouts may eventually move beyond the simulated stage, which is where Path to Live comes in.
Path to Live: when real capital enters the picture
Path to Live is the stage where a consistent funded trader moves from a simulated account to a live brokerage account funded with GFF capital. It is the only stage where you trade real capital, and nothing extra is purchased: eligibility comes from trading your existing simulated account well.
The opportunity is open across EOD Challenge, 1-Day-Pass-Plan, Instant Classic, Flex Challenge, and GOAT Daily accounts, in every size from 25K to 150K. For a wider view of live accounts, read our guide to live funded accounts.
How you qualify
The risk team reviews your full trading record for consistency, drawdown management, trading conduct, risk profile, and overall account history. If the review is successful, the risk team sends you an approval email.
What happens when you are approved
Your approval email confirms your live account size and structure, includes the Live Funded Trader Agreement, and lists any remaining KYC and onboarding steps. Simulated accounts close after the move, and profit you have not withdrawn does not carry over to the live account.
How a live account works
A live account follows its own rules, summarized in the list below, so you know exactly what to expect after approval.
Capital: GFF provides the capital, the account starts at a $0 balance, and the size cannot be scaled once it is live.
Contract limits: 50K allows 2 minis / 20 micros, 100K allows 3 minis / 30 micros, and 150K allows 5 minis / 50 micros.
Drawdown: The drawdown is static at $2,000 on 50K, $3,000 on 100K, and $4,500 on 150K, so the floor never trails as profits grow.
Profit split: You keep 90% of every withdrawal from the first dollar, and the promotional structures used on simulated accounts do not apply.
Payouts: You can request a payout once you are $500 in profit above your starting balance, then daily on business days with no caps.
Rules carried over: The two-minute news buffer and the ban on overnight or weekend holding continue, while no consistency rule applies.
