How to Choose the Right Prop Firm: Key Factors to Consider

Learn how to choose the right prop firm by comparing funding options, trading rules, fees, profit splits, and payouts to find a good fit for your strategy.

How to Choose the Right Prop Firm

With a quick Google search for “how to choose a prop firm for futures trading,” you will find dozens of options. Each tends to promise competitive prices, generous payouts, and attractive trading conditions.

But how do you know which firm is worth your money, particularly when several appear to offer similar benefits?

The answer goes beyond what is advertised. Understanding how to choose a prop firm means knowing which questions to ask, what to verify, and which warning signs to watch for before making a payment.

In this guide, we explain 7 key factors to consider, using Goat Funded Futures (GFF) as a practical example to help you make an informed decision.

First, Know What a Prop Firm Gives You

A prop firm gives you a trading account to use. You pay a fee, follow the firm's rules, and earn payouts when you trade well.

GFF is a futures prop firm, so everything here applies to trading futures. Funded accounts are simulated. This means the account runs in a simulation, not a live brokerage account. Also, the payouts you withdraw are real money.

If you are wondering what to look for in a prop firm, below are the best 7 checks to get started with.

Factor 1: The Rules You Have to Follow

Rules come first because they decide if you keep your account or lose it. The table below explains the common ones, along with what we check for each.

Rule

In plain words

What we check

Daily loss limit

The biggest loss allowed in 1 day before trading stops for the day

If it exists and how big it is for your account size

Profit target

The gain you need to pass an evaluation

The percentage, and if there is a time limit

Trailing drawdown, end of day (EOD)

A floor under your balance. It moves up with your profit once, when the day ends. Fall below it and the account closes

The point where the floor stops moving up

Trailing drawdown, intraday

The same floor, but it moves up live during the day, including on open trades

How closely you need to watch your profit while trading

Consistency rule

Limits how much of your total profit can come from your single best day

The percentage, and which stage it applies to

Holding time rule

Profit from very quick trades can be removed

The minimum time to hold a trade

Our funding plans have different drawdown and risk management requirements, so it is important to understand how each works before choosing.

If you are unfamiliar with trailing drawdown, our guide on end-of-day drawdown explains how your loss limit adjusts as your account balance grows.

Some restrictions apply across all GFF plans.

  • Open positions are automatically closed at 3:55 p.m. Central Time (CT), or 4:45 p.m. Eastern Time (ET) on Instant Lite. This means overnight and weekend holding is not permitted.

  • Funded traders are also prohibited from opening or closing positions within 2 minutes before or after high-impact news releases.

Automated trading rules vary by plan. You can use your own trading bots on EOD Challenge, 1-Day-Pass-Plan, Flex Challenge, and Instant Classic, but not on GOAT Daily or Instant Lite.

Copy trading is permitted between accounts you own, while copying trades from other traders is prohibited.

Factor 2: What It Really Costs

Price is the next piece of how to choose a prop firm, which is influenced by three factors: starting fee, the reset fee, and any extra fees.

All of our plans are a single fee, with no monthly subscription. There is also a $0 activation fee, so your funded account turns on at no extra cost after you pass or buy.

On the evaluation plans, you get 2 resets at a lower price if you do not pass the first time. For example, the EOD Challenge starts at $69 for a 50K account, and its reset costs $59. Instant Classic and Instant Lite skip the evaluation, so they have no resets.

Discounts show up on the homepage banner, in Discord, and in the My Offers tab of your dashboard. The best prop firm for beginners will always have a clear price, reset cost, and no surprise fees.

Factor 3: Profit Split and Payouts

Payouts are the reason many people join, hence why it is an important factor on the route to learning how to choose a prop firm. The profit split is your share of each payout.

  • On our platform, the EOD Challenge, 1-Day-Pass-Plan, and Flex Challenge pay 80/20 by default, so you keep 80%.

  • You can add a 90/10 split at checkout for 20% of the challenge price. GOAT Daily and Instant Lite pay 90/10 from the first payout with nothing to add. Instant Classic pays 100% on your first $10,000 in payouts, then 90/10.

Speed is just as important as the profit split. On the EOD Challenge, 1-Day-Pass-Plan, Flex Challenge, and Instant Classic, you can request payouts twice a month. This is from the 5th to the 8th and from the 20th to the 23rd, once you have enough winning days.

A winning day is a day with a small minimum profit, for example, $100 on a 50K EOD Challenge account.

  • The GOAT Daily plan is different, as you can ask every 24 hours, any day of the month. Instant Lite opens up once you reach your payout target and meet its consistency rule.

Every plan has a $500 minimum request. Payouts go through Rise, a payout platform, and arrive within 2 business days (within 48 hours on GOAT Daily).

A 3% processing fee comes off each payout, so we suggest you plan for a small amount to come off each request.

Our roundup of the fastest payout futures prop firms shows how payout speed compares across the industry.

You also need a Know Your Customer (KYC) check before your first payout. It takes a photo ID and proof of address from the last 3 months. We suggest starting it early, so it never slows you down.

Factor 4: Evaluation or Instant Funding, and Account Size

GFF offers 2 routes to a funded account. With an evaluation, you pay a fee and reach a 6% profit target in 1 phase. There is no time limit, and your funded account turns on within 2 business days of your review.

With instant funding, you start on a funded account the day you buy. Size also factors in. Accounts run from 25K to 150K. Bigger accounts have bigger targets and bigger contract limits, and the fee grows with them.

If you want the best prop firm for beginners' setup, a smaller size on an evaluation plan first may be the right fit. You learn the rules at a lower price.

Factor 5: Platforms and Market Data

Platform fit is easy to forget when you are learning how to choose a prop firm, yet it affects every trade you make.

  • NinjaTrader, Tradovate, TradingView (through Tradovate), TickBlaze, Quantower, ATAS, Volumetrica, DeepCharts, and DeepMap are all supported.

Market data is paid for, so you pay no extra data fees. You pick your platform and data provider at checkout.

Factor 6: Help When You Need It

Reliable customer support is important for situations like payment issues, platform errors, or questions about trading rules.

Before choosing a prop firm, check how easily you can reach its support team, which communication channels are available, and if the answers provided are clear and helpful.

At Goat Funded Futures, we offer 24/7 live chat through our website, email support at support@goatfundedfutures.com, and an active Discord community where traders can ask questions and receive updates.

We also have a dedicated Help Center with detailed explanations of our funding plans, trading conditions, and payout requirements. You can review these resources before purchasing an account to understand exactly what to expect.

Factor 7: Room to Grow

Your journey with a prop firm should not necessarily end after your first payout. When comparing providers, consider whether they offer opportunities to increase your trading allocation, manage multiple accounts, or progress toward live trading.

At GFF, we offer a Path to Live program that allows eligible traders to transition from simulated funded accounts to a live brokerage account using our capital. The program requires no additional purchase and offers a 90/10 profit split from the first dollar.

Qualification is based on a review by our risk team, which assesses your trading consistency, drawdown management, and overall performance over time. There is no fixed payout count or profit target required to qualify.

Until you are selected for the program, you continue trading on your simulated funded account and remain eligible for real cash payouts under your plan's rules.
